PhD candidate Wathela Alhassan got a grant from the IAU

AstroCeNT/NCAC PhD candidate Wathela Alhassan (supervisor – Prof. Tomasz Bulik) got a grant from the International Astronomical Union for doing outreach project in one of the refugee’s camps in Sudan. The grant aim is to promote astronomy in Africa for social good.
Wathela’s project “Astronomy outreach for peace sustainability” is expected to take place during summer break. This will be a series of educational workshops where astronomy will act as a tool to raise awareness of the importance of education for peace sustainability.
The IAU is the international astronomical organisation that brings together more than 12 000 active professional astronomers from more than 100 countries worldwide. Its mission is to promote and safeguard astronomy in all its aspects, including research, communication, education and development, through international cooperation. The IAU also serves as the internationally recognised authority for assigning designations to celestial bodies and the surface features on them. Founded in 1919, the IAU is the world’s largest professional body for astronomers.
