Interns from Warsaw University of Technology at AstroCeNT/NCAC

From July 28th to August 17th, 2023, two students from the Warsaw University of Technology, Franciszek Gniot and Alicja Brzósko, undertook an exciting journey with Astrocent/NCAC. As part of their practical training, they had the unique opportunity to visit and work at CERN, one of the world’s most renowned centers for scientific research, for nearly three weeks.

The internship was supervised by Dr. Marcin Ziembicki, a member of AstroCeNT Research Group 3 and the representative of NCAC in the Hyper-Kamiokande consortium. Under his guidance, the students contributed to several critical tasks that are essential to the ongoing advancements in particle physics.

During their time at CERN, the students assisted in setting up and commissioning a test stand for pre-installation tests of multi-PMT modules, which are crucial components of particle detectors. They also conducted tests on these modules both before their installation in the detector structure and after they were placed in the structure, ensuring their functionality and reliability.

Franciszek and Alicja were actively involved in the construction activities related to the installation of the multi-PMT modules, gaining hands-on experience in a real-world setting. In addition to their primary tasks, they also supported the installation of other components of the detector, contributing to the broader efforts of the team at CERN.

This internship provided the students with invaluable experience in a highly specialized field, allowing them to apply their academic knowledge to real-world challenges and work alongside leading scientists in the field of particle physics.
