Another PhD Defense at Astrocent – Congratulations to Dr. Paul Zakhary!

We are pleased to announce another successful PhD defense from our team at Astrocent! On February 28, 2024, Paul Zakhary defended his PhD thesis, Measurement of Nuclear Recoils in Liquid Argon for Dark Matter Searches.

Paul’s research focused on the precise measurement of nuclear recoils in liquid argon, a crucial aspect of improving sensitivity in dark matter detection experiments. His work contributes to the broader effort of unraveling the mysteries of the universe by refining techniques for identifying rare interactions that could indicate the presence of dark matter.

Paul pursued his PhD studies under the supervision of Dr. hab. Marcin Kuźniak (Astrocent, NCAC PAS), with Dr. hab. Masayuki Wada (Astrocent, NCAC PAS) as his co-supervisor. His thesis was evaluated by a distinguished panel of reviewers:

  • Dr. hab. Kazuki Sakurai, prof. UW (University of Warsaw)
  • Dr. hab. Łukasz Świderski, prof. NCBJ (National Centre For Nuclear Research)
  • Dr. hab. Aleksandra Wrońska, prof. UJ (Jagiellonian University)

Paul’s successful defense marks another significant milestone for Astrocent, highlighting the contributions of our researchers to cutting-edge topics in particle physics and astrophysics.

We congratulate Paul on his achievement and wish him continued success in his scientific career—or any other path where his expertise can contribute to technological and scientific advancements.

Good luck, Dr. Zakhary!
